Theoretical Foundation of the SPARK™ Neurocognitive Model of Care
Created by Lisa A. Greenlee
The SPARK™ Neurocognitive Model of Care is grounded in a fundamental belief: a change in cognition does not erase the person experiencing it. Neurocognitive disorders may alter memory, language, reasoning, perception, behavior, and the ability to perform familiar tasks, but these changes do not diminish a person’s humanity or eliminate the need for identity, connection, emotional security, purpose, dignity, and belonging.
The Five Interconnected Domains of SPARK
The theoretical foundation of SPARK is expressed through five interconnected domains: Engagement, Neurocognitive Support, Mental Health, Self-Preservation, and Dignity & Person-Centered Care. These domains function together rather than as independent interventions.
